Sutherland Street Trees planted by Boys Brigade
Here’s one of the cream cherry trees which still thrive in Sutherland Street today being “planted” by Helensburgh Company, The Boys Brigade and Lifeboys (forerunner of the Junior Section) in 1952 to commemorate the coming coronation. This is most probably a press photo from the Helensburgh & Gareloch Times. The photo and information was kindly supplied by Iain McAllister whose father was Captain of the Company from c1959 until c1966.
Its nice to know that trees continue their enhancement of our environment over such a long period of time and what we do today will be there for others in the future. I wonder how many of those boys considered how much we’d enjoy their efforts 60 or so years later.
